The origin of this word anointing comes from an ancient near east practice of shepherds. Lice and other dangerous insects would often get into the wool of sheep, and when they got near the sheep’s head, they could burrow into the sheep’s ears and kill the sheep. So the shepherds would pour oil on the sheep’s head. This made the sheep’s wool slippery, making it impossible for insects to get near the sheep’s ears because the insects would slide off. From this, anointing became symbolic of blessing, protection, and empowerment. So the anointing of oil was a sign or a defense from the dangerous attacks of the surrounding enemy. The anointing of God makes you dangerous because it hinders Satan from doing what he wants to in your life. The anointing causes your enemies to slide off as God’s protection covers you completely. It stops, as I just showed, the enemy from burrowing into the deep aspects of your spirit man. The term anointing is also found in the New Testament. The Greek words for anoint are chrio, which means “to smear or rub with oil” and, by implication, “to consecrate for office or religious service,” and aleipho, which means “to anoint.” In biblical times, people were anointed with oil to signify God’s blessing or call on that person’s life. And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. (1 Kings 19:16, esv) Then you shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. (Ex 29:7, nasb) The holy garments of Aaron shall be for his sons after him, that in them they may be anointed and ordained. (Ex 29:29, nasb) Jordan Wells 36 The anointing as seen in the previous versions is always connected to the specially ordained call of God on a person’s life. Many think that God just anoints ministers; however, as Christians, we now have open access to this anointing of the spirit. God wants to smear or rub you with his anointing. The only question is, will you let God work in your life? There is another meaning for the word anointed, and that is “chosen one.” The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit to spread the gospel and to free those who have been held captive by sin (Luke 4:18–19; Acts 10:38). Since Christ has left the earth, He gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit ( John 14:16). Christ also gave us spiritual authority over all demonic powers. Now all Christians are anointed, chosen for a specific purpose in furthering God’s kingdom (1 John 2:20). We have, through the anointing, complete power over the kingdom of darkness by faith. If you believe by faith, you are healed; the only way healing will not take place is a result of several things, one being your faith and level of anointing. In the next section, we will learn the key to how a person receives this greater level of anointing.
